TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chairperson Alexander Marwata on Tuesday asserted that the agency’s sting operation or OTT is proven effective in eradicating corruption in the country. He also argues that the effectiveness of such an operation has changed the mindset of state official candidates.
“Is the OTT effective? So far it is indeed. In 2018 we conducted 30 sting operations and was the highest enacted in KPK’s history,” said Alexander on December 27.
However, the myriad of sting ops has not eliminated corruption, he said, as perpetrators are now much more careful in committing their crimes.
“Based on that, the numerous OTTs had not presented a deterrent effect against state officials,” the deputy said in presenting KPK’s year-end performance report.
He elaborated that KPK will continue to adjust the agency’s sting operation procedures to counterbalance future suspects, who he believes have adjusted their crimes to the OTT mechanism that has been revealed multiple times in court.
KPK chairperson Firli Bahuri said that he had ordered each and every KPK employee to not hesitate in conducting sting operations and expose corruption even further.
As reported previously, the Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investments Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan lamented the anti-graft agency’s sting operation tactics and scolded it as one of the aspects that internationally tarnishes the country’s image. He suggested overseeing corruption through digitization.
