TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno said the plan to set a new tariff of Rp3.75 million for entering the Komodo National Park was cancelled. Originally, the new rate was planned to take effect on January 1, 2023.

"It has been retracted and canceled," Sandiaga said in Jakarta, Thursday, December 15. He did not provide details about the cancellation.

In July, the government first announced a plan to raise the ticket price to Komodo National Park from Rp50,000 to Rp3.75 million, citing it necessary as a way to source fund for sustainable conservation efforts.

The discourse reaped protests, especially from locals, whose livelihoods depend on the tourism sector. They feared that the staggering price hike will reduce tourists' visit and eventually impact their income.

On November 26, East Nusa Tenggara Governor Viktor Bungtilu Laiskodat revoked Governor Regulation No.85/2022 on the management of Komodo National Park. The rule was used as the basis for setting new rates to enter national parks.
