TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Iranian court on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, announced that a trial in the capital city of Tehran had sentenced 400 people to prison for up to 10 years for their involvement in the protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini.

Iran has been covered in waves of protest for nearly three months, which the officials described as a disturbance. Tensions in Iran have increased since Amini's death in custody after being arrested on suspicion of violating the dress code for women in Iran.

"In the case trial on the riot in Tehran province, 160 people were sentenced to between 5 and 10 years in prison. There were 80 people sentenced to two and five years in prison and 160 people were sentenced to two years in prison," said Tehran Judiciary Chief Ali Alghasi-Mehr, as quoted from the prosecutor's website Mizan Online.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has drawn widespread international criticism after it executed two people in the past week over the riots that followed Amini's death. Majidreza Rahnavard and Mohsen Shekari, both aged 23, were hanged respectively on Monday and Thursday, December 9, 2022, on charges of "moharebeh" or enmity towards God under Iran's Islamic sharia law.

Before the two were executed, Iranian courts said they had sentenced 11 people who took part in the protests to death. However, campaigners say there are dozens of others facing charges that could lead to them receiving the death sentence.

Since September 16 2022 or when the protests broke out, thousands of people have been arrested. Iran's main security agency said on December 3, 2022, there were more than 200 people killed in the riots following Mahsa Amini's death.
