TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Beets or mostly called beetroots are a vegetable that is characterized by their purplish-red color. Beets are known as a type of tuber fruit that has a myriad of health benefits.

Usually, beets are consumed by juicing or processed into soft texture food. Although the leaves can be cooked as vegetables, beets are better known for their tubers which contain many health benefits.

It is high in carbohydrates but very low in fat, calories, and protein. In addition, beets also have many other important nutrients that are beneficial for health. Here are some of the benefits of beets for health based on various sources:

1. Contains Antioxidants

Antioxidants are compounds that can help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. It can also prevent oxidative stress and damage to good cells within the body. Several studies have found that antioxidants can protect the body against many types of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Beets are rich in folate (vitamin B9) which helps cells grow and function. Folate plays an important role in controlling damage to the blood vessel, which can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

2. Prevent Hypertension

Cited from distan.bulelengkab.go.id, consuming beetroot juice is proven to reduce high blood pressure. The nitrate content, which is also found in green vegetables, can lower blood pressure. The results of research conducted by the Barts and London School of Medicine and also the Peninsula Medical School suggest this inexpensive way to reduce hypertension. According to Prof. Amrita Ahluwalia from Barts & London School of Medicine, drinking beetroot juice and other vegetables rich in nitrates will maintain the health of the heart.

3. Prevent Anemia

The reddish color of beets is often associated with the color of blood, which is used to treat anemia. Beets have a high iron content, which reactivates and regenerates red blood cells and supplies oxygen which is useful for the well-being of the blood cells.

4. Helps Against Inflammation

Beets contain pigments called betalains, which have several anti-inflammatories qualities. Cited from Healthline, a study in 24 people with high blood pressure found that consuming 250 mL of beetroot juice for 2 weeks significantly reduced several symptoms of inflammation, including C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. (TNF-a).

5. Improves Digestive Health

One cup of beets contains 3.4 grams of fiber, making it a good source of fiber. According to WebMD, beets are high in fiber and increase the growth of good bacteria in the intestines. Having lots of healthy bacteria in the digestive system helps protect the body from disease and boosts the immune system. Fiber also improves digestion and reduces the risk of constipation.

6. Increase Stamina

Eating beets can help the heart and lungs work better during exercise. Nitric oxide from beets can increase blood flow to the muscles. Some athletes eat beets or drink beetroot juice during sports to improve their performance.
