TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Health Minister Budi Gunadi said that ceasing the sales of several medicinal syrup brands had succeeded in curbing cases of acute kidney injury. Over the last two weeks, he said, there have been no new cases.
"Since we stopped the drugs, it has dropped dramatically and there are no more new cases. It's been two and a half weeks now," he said at the ministry's press conference on Friday, November 18.
Nevertheless, there were still deaths recorded disease because the patients' kidneys were already too damaged even though they had undergone treatment for 35-40 days.
At the beginning of November, Indonesia recorded 325 cases of acute renal failure among children under the age of 5. The highest number of cases recorded were in Jakarta.
Of the 325 cases, 178 children died.
The Health Ministry said that the drug Fomepizole has been effective in lowering the number of cases of acute kidney injuries. The ministry is now striving to prevent any new cases from emerging.
