TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi said the ASEAN Summit will discuss two major issues regarding ASEAN relations with outsiders and current issues in Myanmar.

“There are two major issues that will be discussed, namely ASEAN relations with outside parties, including, of course, the external challenges faced by ASEAN and the Myanmar problem,” said Retno in a press statement on Wednesday, November 9, 2022.

Retno stated that the Myanmar military is expected to follow up on the 5-point consensus. “It is hoped that ASEAN leaders can take a stand and take steps in responding to the situation in Myanmar, especially the Myanmar military’s lack of commitment to the 5-point consensus. It takes two to tango, ASEAN has taken extra efforts,” Retno remarked.

According to her, the efforts will only yield results if there is a commitment by the Myanmar military to follow up on the consensus.

“The ball is completely in the hands of the Myanmar military, albeit ASEAN's disappointment with the lack of progress on the consensus by the Myanmar military,” she added.

“I believe that ASEAN will continue to prioritize helping the people of Myanmar, including through humanitarian assistance,” she said.

In a series of summit events, ASEAN foreign ministers would meet on November 10-11 to discuss further recommendations on the Myanmar issue. The meeting is a follow-up to the special meeting held at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta on October 27, 2022.

Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, along with the First Lady and a limited delegation, arrived in Phnom Phen on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, to attend the 40th and 41st Summits. The entire series of meetings will be held on November 10-13, 2022.

More than 20 heads of state will present at the ASEAN Summit. Indonesia will also have four bilateral meetings, namely with the Singapore Prime Minister, the President of the Europe Council, the United Nations (UN) Secretary General, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) President.
