TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia was commended for its efforts in reducing deforestation and carbon emissions in the forestry sector. This was revealed in a dialogue between the Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya with representatives of a number of other countries at the Indonesian Pavilion during the UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC) COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, Wednesday 9 November.

According to the Forestry Ministry's statement, the dialogue was held with the Minister of State for Asia, Energy, Climate and Environment of the United Kingdom Minister of State for Asia, The Rt. Hon Lord Goldsmith. There was also Norway's Minister of International Development Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, and the United States' Deputy Special Envoy for Climate Richard Duke.

Goldsmith was praised for Indonesia's achievement in increasing protection for 66 million hectares of primary forest, 600,000 hectares of mangroves and more than 3 million hectares of peat in Indonesia. "It is a great achievement from Minister Siti and President Jokowi," Goldsmith was quoted as saying from the ministry's release.

Meanwhile, Anne Tvinnereim specifically highlighted Indonesia's efforts to slow the rate of deforestation. Seeing the great role of tropical forests like Indonesia's in the context of controlling climate change, Tvinnereim stated Norway is ready to collaborate more closely with Indonesia.

Richard Duke also lauded Indonesia's Forestry and Other Land Uses (FoLU) Net Sink agenda. Duke said that the United States is ready to share experiences in efforts such as forest and land fire control.

Net Sink Target

Minister Siti Nurbaya said that based on the commitment of FoLU Net Sink 2030, by 2030, the level of absorption of greenhouse gasses in the forestry sector and land use is targeted to be at a balance or even greater than the level of emissions. "FoLU Net Sink 2030 was formulated through long experience of taking corrective action in forest and land management," the minister said.
