TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.5 magnitudes jolted the Tanimbar Islands of Maluku, on Friday morning, November 4, 2022. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) noted that the quake originated from the sea, 158 kilometers northwest of the islands.

The quake occurred precisely at 01:46 western Indonesian time (WIB). The epicenter was 72 kilometers. “It is an intermediate quake generated by plate subduction activity,” said the agency’s acting head for the quake and tsunami center, Daryono, in a written statement.

He explained that the quake caused tremors in Saumlaki with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI; this means it is felt by many people indoors. Fortunately, the quake did not trigger a tsunami, based on the modeling results.

The latest quake was recorded jolting Ternate in North Maluku at 04:29 WIB, with a magnitude of 5.0.

The epicenter was also at sea, 79 kilometers southwest of Ternate, and at a depth of 35 kilometers. The shaking was felt weaker at an intensity scale of II-III MMI.
