TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two Indonesian citizens who were injured during Itaewon Halloween stampede last week are slowly recovering. The Indonesian Embassy in Seoul released a statement on Tuesday saying they have contacted AR and CA and ensured they were in good condition.

The Embassy also said that as of Monday, October 31, no Indonesians were reported to have died in the tragic incident in South Korea's popular nightclub district.

Based on the latest data from the South Korean police, the number of people who died in the Itaewon crush has reached 155 people, including 26 foreign nationals from 14 countries.

The Itaewon tragedy took place around 22:00 Saturday night, October 29 when huge crowds flocked into an alleyway for Halloween festivities, the first in three years since Seoul lifted its Covid restrictions.

Witnesses described how the crowd became increasingly difficult to control as the night wore on. Many of those who died, mostly women in their 20s, were near the nightclub, their cries for help drowned by the loud music.

Some witnesses have also said there was a ruckus moments before thousands rushed to the narrow alleyway next to the Hamilton Hotel. Although there were police officers in the area, they had trouble controlling the crowd.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has offered his condolences to the victims. He calls the Halloween Itaewon tragedy as one of the worst disasters in South Korea and the world's worst stampede in decades. South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo on Monday promised to launch a full investigation. The country is currently in a national mourning period.
