TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Communication and Information or Kominfo Minister Johnny G. Plate announced that the government planned to build four data centers with tier 4 certification and government cloud full redundancy. The first project, he said, will be located in the Greater Jakarta or Jabodetabek area.
“In Jabodetabek, the groundbreaking will be carried out in early November 2022. [It will have] tier 4 certification for government needs,” said Johnny at the launching event of the MettaDC data center at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, South Jakarta, on Wednesday, October 26, 2022.
The second data center will be built in Batam. At present, many data centers are being constructed in one of the largest cities in Riau Islands. It will have a quite large capacity and is included in the government’s plan with the private sector.
“The third one is in the new capital city, IKN Nusantara. And the fourth one will be built in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara,” Johnny added.
The Secretary General of the NasDem Party also said that the construction of a data center is highly dependent on the availability of fiber optic lines—it is impossible to open one if there is no fiber optic available. According to him, the four locations have gone through various considerations, including fiber optic lines.
Johnny thus encouraged and invited all elements to bridge the gap in the growth of information and communication technology in a region or digital divide as commanded by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.
“On how to close our national digital divide by building equitable infrastructure, including in the 3T region (the frontier, outermost, and remote regions). And so with the data," the Kominfo Minister concluded.
