Rise Up with Values: V20 2022 Initiatives for Global Recovery

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A communiqué with the theme "Values at the Center" will be launched during the Values20 Summit, or V20 2022 Summit, on October 20-21 at the Green School, Ubud, Bali.

At the online press conference on, Friday, October 14, five national and international speakers—who will be present at the V20 2022 Summit in Ubud next week—discussed a number of strategic information of the V20 2022 Communiqué for Indonesia’s G20 Presidency and the world, as stated in a press release received by Tempo on Friday.

They were Kartika Wirjoatmodjo, Deputy Minister II, Ministry of State-owned Enterprises; Prof. Dr. Makarim Wibisono and Alissa Wahid, Co-Sherpa of V20 2022; Aziz Armand, Vice President Director & CEO of Indika Energy Group; and Dr. Ghazi Binzagr, V20 Global Founder and Member of the Shura Council, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Ghazi Binzagr—who supervised V20 Summits in Saudi Arabia in 2020 and in Italy in 2021, and is overseeing this year’s V20 Summit in Indonesia—said, “The V20 aims to leverage the huge potential of its community of specialists and practitioners through a network hub that will enable continuous knowledge sharing and become an innovation lab for impactful policy designs.” The V20 founder added that, “Understanding values will allow us to explore new horizons for more collaboration.”

Through the communiqué, the V20 2022 Summit produces a number of value-based policy recommendations for the G20 Presidency of Indonesia and the world. “The V20 2022 Communiqué is creatively and interactively present so that its benefits and objectives are easy to understand,” said Makarim Wibisono. “The target of the Communiqué is surely not limited to V20’s global network, but also for the wider public,” emphasized the Indonesian Ambassador to the United Nations in 2004-2007.

Together with Makarim as Co-Sherpa of V20 2022, Alissa Wahid—now Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) Ambassador and Chair of PBNU’s Tanfidziyah (Executive Board)—explained that through the V20 2022 Summit, Indonesia invites the world to move together towards a global recovery on the foundation of values. “To have Values at the Center as the main theme of the Communiqué is most appropriate,” said Alissa, known for her active and persistent campaign for individual superior values in public policy.

The V20 2022 Summit faces at least two crucial challenges at the global level.

First is the Russia-Ukraine war that has caused a series of food and energy crises. Second is the long-recognized challenge of climate change. Countries surely cannot deal with these problems single handedly. They require multilateral approaches and agreements.

Another urgent matter that requires constant monitoring is the process of global recovery in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic that has distressed the world since March 2020.

In dealing with these issues, V20 believes that integrity, accountability, fairness, service, compassion, and gotong royong (sense of community) are values that we must hold firmly as the foundation for a sustainable global recovery.

In addition to health, the world is also eagerly anticipating a post-pandemic economic recovery. Deputy SOEs Minister Kartika Wirjoatmodjo encourages national and global business actors to apply the value of virtue in their businesses’ steps and decision-making. “Today, business ecosystems are facing many global challenges, especially for the post-pandemic recovery. To be able to address all challenges, business strategies implementation must be based on strong and effective values,” he said.

For example, “The SOEs Ministry encourages several strategic initiatives to be based on the values of AKHLAK, which is short for Amanah, Kompeten, Harmonis, Loyal, Adaptif, Kolaboratif (Trust, Competency, Harmony, Loyalty, Adaptiveness, Collaboration), which are closely related to Indonesian state ideology of Pancasila. As educating these values takes a long time, they must be embedded as early as possible. Hopefully, this can become a national-scale program, giving it the ability to push Indonesia into becoming a strong, developed country by 2045,” Kartika emphasized.

As one of Indonesia’s energy business players, Deputy President Director and CEO of Indika Energy Group, Azis Armand, believes that implementing values in the business world is a strategic approach to boost growth. “Values are a company’s foundation in achieving sustainability goals. This principle applies universally. Thus, we need to constantly increase the awareness of values,” Aziz said.

Taking place at the Green School, Ubud, Bali, the V20 2022 Summit will present around 50 speakers from nine countries. They will compile, enrich, and share the best values in the form of policy recommendations compiled in the V20 2022 Communiqué to support Indonesia’s G20 Presidency.

One of V20 2022 Summit’s strengths is its diverse line-up of speakers, panelists, and facilitators. They comprise of global practitioners in the values arena who are joined together as members of the V20 Founding Circle, government representatives, business actors, environmental activists, researchers, education practitioners, and community mobilizers.

Among them is Dr. Richard Barrett, V20 Co-Founder, Founder of the Barrett Academy for the Advancement of Human Values (United Kingdom); Shiv Khemka, V20 Co-Founder, Executive Chairman of the Global Education and Leadership Foundation (India); Dr. Vivi Yulaswati, Expert Staff at the National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS) and Head of Indonesia SDGs Secretariat; Alexandra Askandar, Chair of the Forum Human Capital Indonesia and Deputy CEO of Bank Mandiri; and Nicko Widjaja, CEO of BRI Ventures, Indonesia.

On the last day of the Summit, V20 2022 Co-Chairs Meike Malaon (Nenilai Founder, Director of Dayalima) and Yuri Yogaswara (Nenilai Founder, CEO of Daya Dimensi Indonesia), will hand over the “V20 2023 baton” to India.

V20 is a global community of values experts and practitioners that actively engage with the G20. V20 aims to add depth to the understanding of values in public policy, with the goal of providing the G20 with evidence-based, human-centered policy solutions that contribute to overcoming global challenges.*)
