TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi called for a full investigation over the deadly stampede at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Kabupaten Malang. The incident killed 131 and hospitalized over 300 football supporters of Arema FC.

"I want it to be investigated thoroughly, no cover-up. Sanction those who are wrong, and punish them if a crime was committed," Jokowi said after visiting the injured supporters at Saiful Anwar General Hospital in Malang, Wednesday, October 5.

The president said that the Kanjuruhan Independent Fact-Finding Team, which was established to probe the incident, is given a one-month deadline by the Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security, Mahfud Md.

"But I ask [the team to work] as fast as possible because everything is already visible," he said.

Today Jokowi visited the victims and spoke with some of them. The president told them that all medical expenses are paid by the government. In Malang, Jokowi also handed over compensation to the families of the deceased.

Jokowi also asked the Public Works Ministry to conduct a full audit of all stadiums used by Indonesia's football leagues: Liga 1, Liga 2, and Liga 3. He wants to make sure that each stadium has exit gates that are wide enough, up to standard in size, and he wants to know who the field managers in charge are.

He also said he had communicated with FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Monday evening. According to the president, Mr. Infantino said that FIFA is ready to help improve football management in Indonesia.
