Medan's Kesawan Old Town Revamped into a Heritage Tourist Site

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Old Town of Kesawan is projected as a heritage tourist destination in Medan City, North Sumatra. The area is known to have historical values that can attract travelers.
"The revamping of the downtown area of Kesawan Old Town, which has kicked off, is an effort to realize a heritage tourism field," said Medan City's Tourism Office head Agus Suriyono said on Tuesday, October 4.
The Kesawan district is part of the history of Medan City, located in the city center. The area is home to numerous colonial buildings including the Warenhuis, the city's first ever supermarket built circa 1916.
The area also hosts the home of merchant Tjong A Fie at Ahmad Yani Road, and the Old Mosque built in 1885.
In addition to the heritage concept, according to Agus, the Old Town tourism spot will be combined with efforts to promote Medan City as The Kitchen of Asia. A culinary center will be built to introduce a variety of Indonesian specialty dishes.
