TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Regional Secretary Marullah Matali said that Southeast Asia is one of the regions that are vulnerable to being affected by global climate change. The impacts include rising sea levels, heat waves, sinking lands, and rising intensity of storms.

“As I said earlier, Jakarta will definitely be affected by sea level rise and other effects of global climate change,” he said at Jakarta’s Aryaduta Hotel, Wednesday, September 28, 2022.

This morning, Marullah opened an event about capacity building in implementing climate disaster control in the Southeast Asia region organized by the Jakarta Environmental Agency.

The impact of the climate crisis mentioned by Marullah refers to the report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). According to him, the potential disaster is actually an old issue that had been echoed around 1980. For example, there was land subsidence on the coast of Jakarta.

“And now it's starting to show,” he emphasized.

Asep Kuswanto, the head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, added that land subsidence has occurred on the north side of the capital, specifically the coastal area. The tidal flood is also increasing.

This is caused by global warming due to greenhouse gases and the melting of the north pole. “It will cause sea level rise, so it is true that both rain and flooding often occur,” Asep explained.

For this reason, disaster mitigation measures are fundamental. The mitigation efforts must not only be carried out by the Environment Agency but also all related parties.
