TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cyber security expert Abhimanyu Wachjoewidajat opined that changing a cellphone number after getting a cyber attack is possible but it would not have much effect on the difficulty level of hacking in the future.

“[The hacking] won’t be getting more difficult because the personal data is not stored on the SIM card but on the service database registered using a cellphone number as identification,” Abhimanyu told Tempo on September 18, 2022.

According to him, the security system is relative, whether it is using a domestic or foreign SIM card number as it depends on each provider or operator used. If the provider has a poor security system then hacking is possible.

“Data security depends on the efficacy of each service provider in protecting user data,” Abhimanyu remarked.

Previously reported, the Minister of Communications and Information (Kominfo) Johnny G. Plate replaced his cellphone number with an American number following the cyber attack allegedly committed by a hacker Bjorka. On his Twitter account, the hacker questioned the minister's decision and reasons.

“Is it true that Indonesian numbers are no longer safe to use?” the hacker tweeted on his account @bjorxanism.

Bjorka recently seized the public spotlight after disclosing the sensitive data belonging to a number of state officials, including Kominfo Minister Johnny G Plate.
