TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Commander of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) Tengku Abdullah Syafe’i has been killed in fighting with the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police in Meunasah Sarah Panjang Village, Pidie, Tuesday morning (22/1). In the shootout that took place, Tengku Abdullah’s wife, Fatimah, was also killed. Their corpses are in the morgue of the General Hospital in Sigli, Pidie. Ahmad Sud, Tengku Abdullah’s brother, has confirmed their death. “I am certain he is my brother,” he said. Ahmad is a teacher in Matang Blumpang, Bireuen. The incident claimed the lives of seven GAM guerillas. Alongside Tengku Abdullah and his wife, the victims are M. Daud Hasyim (50), Usman Abdullah (32)and M. Isa, whilst two other victims have not yet been identified. Some months ago, rumors emerged that the GAM Commander had been killed during fighting in Jimjim Village, Pidie, but these proved false. Jimjim village is known as a GAM base and is therefore often the target of attacks by the TNI. Tengku Abdullah had held a press after this rumor emerged and invited reporters to interview him and to take his picture. (Zaenal Bakri - Tempo News Room)
