TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in his state speech at the House of Parliaments on Tuesday attributed Indonesia’s success in no longer importing rice for the past three consecutive years to infrastructure projects that supported the national rice productivity.

One of the infrastructures he refers to is the dams and irrigations spread across strategic regions. The government aims to build 61 dams during Jokowi’s two terms in office which started in 2014 and will end in 2024.

"For consumed rice, we have no longer imported in the last three years. The construction of dams and irrigation has supported increasing national productivity," said Jokowi while reading his state speech at the DPR/MPR Building, Jakarta, Tuesday, August 16.

With no more rice imports for the last 3 years, Indonesia has just received an award from the International Rice Research Institute because it is considered capable of achieving a system of food security and rice self-sufficiency since 2019.

Jokowi believes that the ability to maintain food security in the future will be even greater after the government will also focuses on optimizing clean energy sources and a green economy.

The nursery and rehabilitation of tropical forests and mangrove forests, as well as the rehabilitation of marine habitats, he said, would also continue.
