TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta provincial government has expedited efforts to vaccinate livestock against foot and mouth disease (FMD) in a bid to bring down the rate of new cases to zero.

Head of the Jakarta Food, Maritime, and Agriculture Security Office Suharini Eliawati said that her office has implemented a number of strategies to bring the number of FMD cases to zero in the province.

"Officers are administering vaccinations to livestock at the Jakarta livestock center to (improve) the immunity of groups of animals susceptible to FMD," Eliawati informed on Saturday.

The provincial government is committed to distributing vaccines for livestock that are vulnerable to FMD, she added.

Her administration has also imposed strict controls over animal distribution by barring animal movement from areas that have reported FMD cases, she said.

Further, the Jakarta Food, Maritime, and Agriculture Security Office is treating infected cattle with clinical symptoms until they show some signs of recovery.

The spread of the disease has started to become more controlled of late. According to data from the FMD task force, out of 37 provinces, FMD infections have been reported in as many as 24 provinces.

Meanwhile, no new cases have been reported in 6 of the provinces—Bali, South Sumatra, Riau Islands, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and Jakarta.

According to the task force's official website, as of August 11, 2022, a total of 1,168 livestock in Jakarta have been vaccinated against FMD, and a total of 991 animals have recovered from the disease.

Through the Agriculture Ministry, the government has expedited efforts to suppress the transmission of the disease, especially in provinces with the highest rate of FMD transmission: East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, West Java, Aceh, and Central Java.

In addition, the government is encouraging the acceleration of vaccinations for healthy livestock since vaccinations can control the rate of FMD transmission.
