TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) and Microsoft have announced a strategic partnership to work hand in hand through the tech giant’s Cyber Threat Intelligence Program (CTIP), which is a program that aims to strengthen the security of a country's infrastructure against cyber threats.

This strategic partnership enables BSSN to gain access to Microsoft's cyber threat intelligence in Indonesia, thereby providing better insight into the existing cyber crime infrastructure.

The BSSN with its network domain knowledge can help run two-way intelligence to identify compromised infrastructure and alert affected entities in Indonesia to potential cybercrime threats.

“Microsoft's Cyber Threat Intelligence Program is led by our Digital Crimes Unit (DCU), an international team of technical, legal, and business experts created in 2008 to fight cyber crime on a global scale,” said Mary Jo. Schrade, Assistant General Counsel, and Regional Lead, Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) Asia, in her statement on August 10.

Since 2010, DCU has collaborated with law enforcement and other global partners on 25 malware intrusion operations worldwide, helping millions of devices stay safe from cyber criminals.

Meanwhile, Microsoft, through its CTIP program, has been collecting and distributing actionable cyber intelligence since 2013, which include Microsoft DCU's botnet removal operations to Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERT), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), as well as the Critical Infrastructure Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC). CTIP data is also embedded into specific Microsoft products and services to help customers identify threats in their computing environment.

Meanwhile, BSSN deputy of operation and cybersecurity Maj. Gen. Dominggus Pakel openly welcomed the partnership with Microsoft and the CTIP that would elevate the agency’s cybersecurity capabilities and prevent and mitigate cyber-attacks.

"Through this collaboration, we hope to increase Indonesia's cybersecurity guarantee for all sectors, be it the government, vital information infrastructure, the digital economy and society. It is hoped that this partnership can help overcome the increasing threats and cyber attacks or cyber crimes that occur in Indonesia,” said Domminggus.
