TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) aims to see 1.8 million workers in the green economy sector by 2030 that are spread across multiple industrial sectors such as energy, electric vehicles, land restoration, and waste sector.

"The Green Economy Index is a tangible manifestation of Indonesia in measuring the effectiveness of a sustainable and low-carbon economic transformation with an accurate methodology. For this reason, a continuous increase in the index will certainly be carried out taking into account the latest developments," said Bappenas Head Arifin Rudiyanto at the third G20 Development Working Group (DWG) on August 8, in Nusa Dua, Bali.

Citing Antaranews, he said the government would establish the Green Economy Index as one of the macro development targets and include it in the mid-term and long-term national development planning documents.

The Green Economy Index itself consists of 15 indicators covering three pillars of sustainability, namely environmental, economic, and social.

According to the Green Economy Index report, efforts to transition to a Green Economy are beneficial for Indonesia, including average GDP growth of 6.1-6.5 percent per year until 2050, 87-96 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions saved in the range of 2021-2060, up to 68 percent reduction in emission intensity in 2045.

In the environmental sector, 40,000 lives can potentially be saved by reducing air pollution by 2045, restoration of ecosystem services worth US$4.75 trillion per year by 2060, 3.2 million hectares of primary forest protected by 2060, and an additional 4.1 million hectares of forest cover by 2060.
