TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted parts of Banten this afternoon, August 5, 2022, at 16:23 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). The quake was centered in the sea, 101 kilometers southwest off Cimanggu, Pandeglang.

The tremor was felt at the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale II-III.

The acting head of the quake and tsunami center at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Daryono, reported that the quake, which was sourced from the southern region of the Sunda Strait, occurred at a depth of 15 kilometers.

“This is a shallow quake triggered by an active seabed fault on the Eurasian plate (intraplate quake),” he said in a written statement.

Based on the estimated shakemap, the shaking could be felt in Cimanggu, Sumur, Cibitung, and Pandeglang. The agency has not yet received any reports of damage caused by the quake that has no potential to trigger a tsunami.

As of 16:41 WIB, BMKG recorded no aftershocks. Daryono asked residents to remain calm and not be influenced by baseless issues. People are also suggested to avoid cracked buildings.
