TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale rocked Timor Island of Indonesia's Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) Province on Wednesday, 3 August 2022, at 14:51 local time. According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake has no potential to cause a tsunami.

Bambang Setiyo Prayitno, the BMKG's head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center, said that the earthquake in the North Coast of North Central Timor was a tectonic one.

The epicenter of the earthquake was on sea, 45 kilometers northwest of North Central Timor, at a depth of 46 kilometers.

Bambang said that the shallow quake was caused by the collisions of the Australian and Eurasian Continental Plates.

The earthquake caused tremors in Mutis, North Bikoni and East Amfoang with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI, which people inside their homes could feel. So far, there have been no reports of the impact of damage caused by the earthquake.

As of 15:15 West Indonesia Time, the BMKG's monitoring result has not shown any activities suggesting aftershocks.
