TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communication and Information Ministry (Kominfo) apologized to local game developers following the blocked access to online platforms including Steam, a video game digital distribution service.
“[Local game developers] who distribute [their games] via Steam, please wait. We have had communication with Steam, and they are preparing registration,” said the ministry’s Director General of Informatics Applications Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan in a virtual press conference on Sunday, July 31, 2022.
The ministry admitted that Steam has shown a commitment to follow the ministry’s regulation No. 5/2020 which requires the electronic system provider (PSE) to register.
A number of games developed by local developers and released on Steam include Dreadout, She and The Light Bearer, and Coffee Talk among others. “Let’s wait. Hopefully, [Steam] can register quickly,” Semuel added.
In addition to Steam, Kominfo stated that Dota 2 and Counter-Strike Global Offensive have also sent letters regarding the registration. However, four other blocked online platforms have not contacted the ministry yet, namely Epic Games, Origin, Yahoo, and PayPal.
As for the online payment service PayPal, Kominfo said its registration was invalid because it was carried out by its representative.
