TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo met with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in a meeting held in Tokyo on Wednesday, July 27. According to the Indonesian Presidential Secretariate Youtube channel, one of the focal points in the discussion between the two leaders was the plan to conduct joint military training between Japan’s Army and the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI).

Such a joint military exercise is set to be held under the banner of the ‘Super Garuda Shield 2022.’

“It will be the inaugural moment Japan participates in the multilateral Garuda Shield held in Indonesia. We expect the partnership will include the field of defense, which is expected to be expanded even further,” said Kishida as aired by the Presidential Secretariate’s office on July 27.

Moreover, the two leaders hinted at discussing regional issues and international cooperation, such as the military aggression between Russia and Ukraine, the East and South China sea situation, North Korea’s policies such as the nuclear warhead, rumors of abductions, and the situation related to Myanmar.

The Japanese Prime Minister also mentioned international cooperation such as nuclear nonproliferation and weapons disarmament along with strengthening the role and function of the United Nations.

President Jokowi, in the meeting, mostly mentioned economic issues such as requesting Japan to provide support for a lowered tariff for agricultural and fisheries products. In terms of investments, the Indonesian president invited Japan to invest in other domestic strategic sectors.
