TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communication and Informatics Ministry (Kominfo) is set to enforce sanctions for foreign and domestic digital technology platforms that fail to register themselves as PSE or electronic system provider starting from Thursday, July 21.

"Starting from tomorrow (July 21) we have started sending out letters, at least it has started. Because we are actually making it easy and we hope that the community will actually build trust," said Director General of Information and Communications Applications Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan in a press release on Wednesday, July 20.

Sanctions that will be handed out range from the first phase warning in the form of a written warning, which means the government will not immediately block unregistered companies.

He also clarified that the government connection blockage for corporations that fail to register passed the deadline will only be temporary. Digital electronic system providers, according to the Kominfo, will automatically be excluded from its blocker machine once they register themselves.

Among others, tech companies targeted under the PSE regulation include major digital firms such as Google, Twitter, and WhatsApp, which has a deadline of July 20.

The government, said Samuel, is committed to monitoring the traffic of every digital platform that has not been registered until the latest deadline. "We have the ability to see how many traffic applications are in Indonesia. So regarding the sanctions, the stages are written warnings, then there are fines and the last is temporary termination of access," said Semuel.
