TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) plans to visit Japan at the end of July 2022, the Foreign Ministry noted in a press statement released on Saturday.

The head of state's plan to visit Japan was discussed at a bilateral meeting between Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and her Japanese counterpart, Hayashi Yoshimasa, on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Bali on Friday night.

"The two foreign ministers also discussed bilateral cooperation in the fields of infrastructure, human resource development, and coastal guard capacity building," the ministry stated.

They also discussed a plan to commemorate 65 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 2023.

On the occasion, Marsudi, on behalf of the Indonesian government and people, also extended condolences over the demise of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe shot during a campaign event in Nara Prefecture on Friday.

Meanwhile, according to a press statement from the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta, Hayashi commended Marsudi for her leadership during the G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting and echoed Japan's continued support for the success of the G20 Summit in Bali in November 2022.

"With regard to the situation in Ukraine, one of the topics discussed at the G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting, the two ministers stressed that every effort to change the status quo with force is unacceptable anywhere in the world," the embassy stated.

Both foreign ministers later exchanged views on the latest situation in Myanmar.

Hayashi expressed concern over the recent steps taken by Myanmar for approving the execution of the death sentence and moving Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to prison from house arrest.

"Minister Hayashi also reaffirmed that Japan will continue to fully support ASEAN's efforts under the Indonesian leadership next year," the embassy stated.

Both foreign ministers held a closed-door meeting that lasted for 15 minutes. This is Hayashi's first meeting with Marsudi since being appointed as the Japanese foreign minister in November 2021.
