TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station, Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of potential forest and land fires in most areas of East Nusa Tenggara. The early warnings are applied starting June 22, 2022.

"Most of East Nusa Tenggara fall in the 'very easy category' or 'red' category for the forest and land fires," BMKG El Tari Kupang Station chief, Agung Sudiono Abadi, said in Kupang, Wednesday.

Some areas categorized as very prone to forest and land fires include Kupang City, Kupang Regency, South Central Timor, North Central Timor, Belu, Rote Ndao, and Sabu Raijua.

In those areas, Agung said, reeds and leaves that usually cover the forest floor are very dry and highly flammable that even the smallest spark will cause fire that can spread very quickly.

He appealed to residents to be aware of or prevent the forest and land fires, because East Nusa Tenggara is currently being hit by strong winds as well.

"Strong, dry winds during the dry season make it easy for forest and land fires to break, and more difficult to deal with," he said.
