TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tempo journalists Abdul Manan and Krisna Adhi Pradipta, along with contributors Jamal A. Nashr, Yogi Eka Sahputra, and Aseanty Pahlevi have won the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) 2022 Awards for the Excellence in Environmental Journalism category from an extensive report on illegal fishing entitled 'Oceans Inc.'

The in-depth article is a product of a collaborative effort with crossborder journalists under the Environmental Reporting Collective issued on August 23, 2021, and competed against 20 journalists from 13 countries.

On June 16, SOPA Awards 2022 in its jury statement mentioned on its website stated that the Oceans Inc reporting is "An ambitious collaboration from different media organizations around the world. The deaths of Indonesian fishers on Chinese fishing boats have been documented before, but this story took it a step further, with multiple reporters interviewing deckhands who have worked on 14 ships operated by the same company to show a pattern of abuse and negligence."

The judges added that the rich presentation complemented with photos, videos, and charts, added to the readers' experience.

The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) is a Hong Kong-based non-profit organization founded in 1982 to fight for press freedom, promote excellence in journalism, and support best practices for all local and regional publishing platforms in the Asia Pacific region.

The SOPA Award for Editorial Excellence was initiated in 1999 as an award for quality editorial products in both traditional and new media. The awards cover a variety of categories reflecting Asia's diverse geopolitical environment.
