TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Riau Islands Tourism Agency recorded an astounding 718.99 percent growth in international tourist visits to the City of Batam in April. The region logged 8,149 tourist visits compared to the previous month that only recorded 995 visits.

"The Riau Islands is starting to rise again following the pandemic. It is already close to the numbers [of visits] recorded in 2018-2019,” said the local tourism agency head Boeralimar on Wednesday, June 8.

According to Boeralimar, the access that has been opened via Singapore contributed to the sudden increase in tourist visits. It aligns with the region’s statistics that show most of its tourists come from Singapore.

He also hopes that the Singapore government will soon open another port to Batam. Currently, only one port has been opened, namely Tanah Merah Port.

"Soon we will seek the entry of South Korean tourists via charter flights at Batam's Hang Nadim Airport, the plan is June 2022," said Boeralimar.
