TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A representative of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) announced on Thursday, June 2, 2020, that the Ministry is in the middle of converting 120 million motorcycles from using internal combustion engines to electric motors.

The Ministry said that such an effort is being carried out to achieve the carbon-neutral goal in 2060. The conversion is also estimated to save up to 1 million barrels of fuel each day, Bisnis.com reported.

"We are conducting electric motorcycle conversions, so fuel-powered motorcycles are converted to electric motorcycles. There are 120 million motorcycles in Indonesia and 1 motorcycle uses roughly 2 liters of fuel, which means 240 million liters are needed each day," said Dadan Kusdiana, director-general of new, renewable energy and energy conservation, during the opening of the Spark 2022 Renewable Energy Festival on Thursday, June 2, 2022.

According to Dadan, the Ministry is working along with respective stakeholders in the field of electric motors who are developing domestically-produced motor drivers. Dadan hoped that the development in this field will attract investors to fund Indonesia's commitment to clean energy.

"In my opinion, this has a broad potential because the market is there, and we can calculate it and the president also encourages the use of domestic production," Dadan explained.

State-owned electricity company PLN is currently developing the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC), which opens possibilities for industries or individuals to get incentivized in the use of clean energy. PLN is also exploring the business of carbon credits for industries and individuals who want to reduce the carbon footprint of their businesses.
