TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) expressed its appreciation to the Indonesian Military (TNI) for naming 10 of its members as suspects in the cage case at the house of the inactive Langkat Regent, Terbit Rencana Perangin Angin.

“We appreciate the good step of TNI Commander General Andika Perkasa who announced that he had named 10 suspects in the Langkat case,” said Komnas HAM commissioner Choirul Anam on Monday, May 23, 2022.

Anam said the suspect naming was in line with Komnas HAM’s recommendations for this case. The investigation conducted by the commission found that a number of soldiers committed fatal physical abuse against people who were kept in the cage.

According to him, communication between Komnas and the TNI went well during the investigation. The National Military Police Headquarters (Puspom), he added, often had discussions with Komnas and asked for evidence of involvement of its members. “Puspom came to Komnas HAM several times,” Anam added.

He said the completion of this case was crucial for the victim and the community, as well as to prove that the TNI is committed to upholding the law and human rights. “Once again, we appreciate it,” said Anam.

Anam hoped that the investigation until the trial of this human cage case can be carried out transparently so as to increase public trust in the commitment of the authority to solving cases.
