TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Over a dozen of houses, and kiosks located in the Dogiyai Regency in Papua went ablaze after being intentionally burned by unknown people on Sunday evening, May 22. This has forced 100 women and children to take refuge at the region’s military-police post.

“It is confirmed that residents’ houses at three locations were burned down on Sunday night. They had to take refuge at the TNI-Police post,” said Dogiyai Police Chief Bambang Suranggono in Jayapura, Papua, on May 23, Antaranews reported.

He explained that the perpetrators have yet been identified as their initial target was a local market but eventually failed and targeted people’s houses. The situation was highly unsafe as perpetrators tried to commit arson in locations that were not guarded at the time, he said.

Police have now been mobilized to overcome the situation and prevent further crimes from happening. Despite 20 houses burned down, the Papua police chief assured us that there are no casualties in the incident.
