TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian football team coach Shin Tae-yong offered an apology to supporters after the national U-23 team was beaten by Thailand at the semifinal match of 2021 SEA Games on Thursday, May 19, 2022.

“Sorry for today's defeat. We will play better so as not to disappoint Indonesian fans,” he said during a press conference after the game at Thien Truong Stadium, Nam Dinh, Vietnam, Thursday.

The young Garuda squad lost 0-1 against Thailand even after the extra time. This defeat made Indonesia fail to advance to the final.

Tae-yong also expressed disappointment at the performance of his team players who were considered lacking in sportsmanship.

At the end of the extra time, three Indonesian players received red cards after a feud with opposing players. They were Firza Andika, Rachmat Irianto and Ricky Kambuaya.

“I am honestly very disappointed with the players. I can still understand if we get a yellow card in one game, but this is clearly not fair play. The players have no responsibility as a player,” Shin Tae-yong said.

The Indonesian U-23 team will then face Malaysia, which was defeated by Vietnam 0-1, to win the bronze medal at My Dinh National Stadium, Hanoi, on Sunday, May 22, 2022.
