TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - West Papua Regional Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported that the regional economy in the first quarter of 2022 experienced a contraction or minus 1.01 percent from the year before (year on year/yoy).

Head of West Papua BPS Maritje Pattiwaellapia said the contraction was triggered by the declining performance of several business sectors that support the local economy.

Business sectors with negative growth in the province include the manufacturing industry (-2.32 percent), mining and quarrying (-4.31 percent), construction (-2.03 percent), and the government administration business and mandatory social security sector (-0.12 percent).

A number of sectors outside the mentioned above experienced positive growth.

"Sectors with the largest contribution to the economy saw a deep contraction, causing high impacts," said Maritje in Manokwari, Thursday, May 12.

Other than those factors, the slow pace of economic growth in the country's westernmost province was influenced by the decline in the performance of foreign exports by 33.14 percent and gross fixed capital formation (PMTB) by 13.40 percent.

Additionally, Statistics Indonesia recorded that West Papua's economy also contracted 1.96 percent when compared to that in the fourth quarter of 2021.
