TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government is set to construct the future New Capital or IKN - which will reside in East Kalimantan - with an urban forest and smart city concept and bearing the tagline of the “10-minute city” thanks to the city’s integrated facilities.

The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) regional development deputy Rudy Soeprihadi Prawiradinata elaborated the tagline refers to the average time duration for residents to access public facilities.

“The 10-minute reference means everyone will be able to access services or public facilities within a 10-minute time frame. Every facility will be available in this one area,” said Prawiradinata in a virtual press conference regarding the IKN on May 10.

The new capital’s construction that will last until 2045 will hone accessibility as one of its core principle designs with 80 percent of mobilization spots supported by public transportation.

He also claims the design of the city will enable people to reach strategic airports within 50 minutes, which is hoped to be realized in 2030. The transportation that will be established in the New Capital is mainly designed to be environmentally friendly and hone a greater waste management system with readily consumable tap water in its design.

In terms of the vegetation in the East Kalimantan region, he claims the government is committed to actually increasing the green forest area from the current 40 percent to a goal of 75 percent. The government is also eyeing for the New Capital to rank higher in the E-government development index (EDGI).

“Original forest area is currently only 40 percent or 256,000 hectares. Later on, we will grow that to 75 percent with 60 percent of if being an area of protected forest,” he explained.
