TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), Hendra Gunawan, reported that the volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau had started to weaken last Thursday, April 28. This was concluded after the agency carried out aerial observations which were overlaid by monitoring results from the observation post.

Hendra said the results showed that the energy of the tremor as an eruption generator has decreased drastically.

“[Based on] the data recorded instrumentally, the energy of this tremor has dropped, both recorded through tools and direct monitoring,” said Hendra in a statement, Friday, April 29.

Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Lt. Gen. Suharyanto, asked the public to remain vigilant. Although there has been a decline in volcanic activity, he emphasized that Mount Anak Krakatau remains at alert level III or Waspada (Caution).

Suharyanto said the volcanic activity of the mountain in Sunda Strait is still quite fluctuating as it can decrease or increase at any time.

“Stay cautious, stay alert but that doesn't mean to cause panic. People must be updated [about information related to the mountain] via the government's official website to prevent hoaxes. People are expected to remain calm,” he said.

The volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau has been rising again since Sunday, April 24, 2022, which was evident from the earthquakes, eruptions, and landslides or avalanches.
