Indonesia's Unemployment Rate Down to 6.49% in 2021

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's unemployment rate had declined to 6.49% as of August 2021. A year before in August 2020, there were 9.77 million unemployed people or 7.07 percent. The number fell to 9.1 million people in August 2021.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto attributed the decline to a series of government policies.
"This proves that the policies issued by the government are in line with the implementation of programs to reduce unemployment," he said at the 'National Seminar on Regional Economic Acceleration to Stimulate National Recovery' in Jakarta, Tuesday, February 8.
Airlangga said the number of unemployed had increased from 7.1 million people in 2019 to 9.77 million in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The minister said that 29.12 million of the working-age population were affected by the pandemic.
One of the government's efforts to curb unemployment is the Pre-Employment Card program. In 2021, the program had distributed Rp18.13 trillion to 5.96 million people.
