Indonesia Aims at Becoming Global Vaccine Production Hub

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Finance Ministry’s expert staffer for macro economy and international finance, Wempi Saputra, on Friday said the government will bring up the idea of Indonesia becoming a vaccine manufacturing hub in the upcoming G20 agendas this year.

According to him, mRNA vaccine production hubs have been established in countries such as Brazil, Argentina, and South Africa.

“The Minister of Health plans to discuss this and push for a vaccine manufacturing hub,” Wempi told journalists on January 28. “Is Indonesia prepared to take the role? We surely are. This is what we will push to discuss.”

Based on his rough estimates, he believes if this idea is realized, Indonesia’s wealth can potentially grow more than Rp1,000 trillion from producing vaccines not only for COVID-19, but also other illnesses.

“The Health Minister is truly fighting for a manufacturing hub,” he said.
