TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government is planning to auction old Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) ships that have sustained damages and are deemed inefficient to repair. This was announced on Thursday in a written statement by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati.

This move has been noted by the Finance Minister, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, and National Armed Forces (TNI) Commander Gen. Andika Perkasa. It was presented ahead of House legislators of Commission 1 on Thursday.

They only need to see the House approve the auction plan and then report the results to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

“The plan to sell these state-owned items are based on the condition they are in, which are heavily damaged ships. It is also inefficient to repair. It will not disrupt the Indonesian Navy’s function if the items are removed,” said Sri Mulyani in a written statement on January 27.

The Navy ships set for auction are KRI Teluk Mandar-514 and KRI Teluk Penyu-513. The former ship was first procured in 1969 at Rp121.89 billion, while KRI Teluk Penyu was purchased in 1979 at Rp121.34 billion.

Two of the Indonesian Navy ships were once offered by the Defense Ministry on May 19, 2021 to be turned into coral reefs. However, this move did not materialize and was postponed until now.
