TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tourists will be required to wear special sandals dubbed upanat during visits to Borobudur Temple. The use of special sandal is intended to preserve the structure of the world’s largest Buddhist temple.

The government has launched a trial on the use of upanat. Deputy Secretary for Tourism and Creative Economy at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Rustam Efendi, said the specially-designed sandals are necessary to prevent damage to the temple stones.

“If there are no preventive measures, it is feared that this world heritage that we are proud of will be damaged,” said Rustam on Wednesday, January 26.

According to him, the upanat sandals are light and comfortable to wear despite being made of woven pandan leaves.

Rustam also explained that the sandals are produced by local people, bringing positive impacts on the community’s economy. “These sandals are not imported from other regions, but made by local communities with local raw materials,” he said.

With these multiple impacts, Rustam hoped that people living around Borobudur Temple would be benefited from the tourist site.
