TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police to investigate the case of an alleged slander committed by former politician Edy Mulyadi. He allegedly referred to East Kalimantan - where the new capital city (IKN) will be built - as a place where “genies throw babies”.
East Kalimantan Police spokesperson senior commissioner Yusuf Sutejo on Wednesday said the case is now handled by the National Police criminal investigation unit (Bareskrim).
“This is in the hands of the Bareskrim,” he confirmed to Tempo on January 26. “The Bareskrim will summon him.”
Mulyadi’s controversial statement initially spread via social media which was followed by police reports filed by a number of mass organizations and local communities on Monday. His demeaning comment is deemed highly offensive for East Kalimantan residents.
The East Kalimantan provincial government through its regional secretary M. Sa’bani urged people to “act proportionally” to Edy Mulyadi’s comment. He feels that this case needs to be handled with a level head.
“We must maintain peace in the region to support [the establishment] of the new capital city in East Kalimantan,” said Sa’bani.
