TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, said the government is seeking to export cars to Australia starting in the first quarter of this year.

"Hopefully soon. Tapping the Australian market is not easy, especially [obtaining] permission from the principal. This is historic," Minister Agus told media reporters in Jakarta, Tuesday, January 25.

The Minister did not mention which brands of cars will be exported.

He said that penetrating Australia's car market is not easy. There are numerous terms, including strict requirements on carbon standards set by their government.

Since the implementation of the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA), Indonesia has the potential to increase its export products. All Indonesian export products entering Australia will enjoy a 0 percent tariff.

Other Indonesian products with export potentials to Australia aside from automotive goods are wood and its derivatives—including furniture, fisheries, textiles and textile products, shoes, communication equipment, and electronic equipment.
