Minister of Communications and Informatics Johnny G Plate during an online discussion on Indonesia Outlook 2022 held by Tempo, December 8, 2021.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communication and Information Minister Johnny Gerald Plate said the government would apply a travel bubble scheme to welcome the G20 Presidency in Indonesia in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 during the international forum.

“The travel bubble scenario must also be prepared because we pay attention to the current development of COVID-19 while we want the success of holding G20, which will have 158 meetings in 19 cities and involve 20,988 delegates,” said Johnny in his statement, Monday, January 24.

He explained the travel bubble will work in accordance with the case development of the Omicron variant. This new COVID-19 variant of concern spreads massively in a number of countries and is driving a surge in positive cases.

He said the scheme had been applied for the National Sports Week (PON XX) Papua in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The travel bubble was considered successful in suppressing the potential for virus transmission and would subsequently be applied to various international agendas. In addition to the G20, the scheme would be applied to the international racing event MotoGP which would take place in Mandalika in March 2022.
