TEMPO.CO, Semarang - The Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been detected in Central Java. Central Java Police spokesman Iqbal Alqudusy said nine people were exposed to the variant of concern.

“Based on the results of the whole genome sequencing, it was found that nine people were positive for Omicron,” Iqbal said in a written broadcast on Friday, January 21.

According to him, the nine cases were discovered in four regions, namely “Semarang, Cilacap, Pekalongan, and Sukoharjo.”

Iqbal encouraged the public to maintain discipline in complying with the predetermined health protocols because the variant could spread faster than the previous ones. “Keep wearing a mask, limiting mobility, and washing your hands,” he underlined.

He hoped that the public would immediately take vaccine booster shots to prevent infections.

The COVID-19 Task Force recorded as of January 20 that the new daily cases reached 2,116, the highest in the last 3.5 months. Jakarta contributed the highest number with 1,155 new cases, followed by West Java with 401 cases and Banten with 276 cases.
