TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) in a press conference on Thursday announced that it had permitted 96 cargo ships with coal payloads to export the commodity.

"We have revoked the export ban for a number of ships based on several considerations," said The ESDM director-general of Mineral and Coal Ridwan Djamaluddin in a press conference on January 20.

However, the government has only permitted 75 coal cargo ships from mining companies that have met 100 percent of their domestic market obligations or exceeded that.

As of today, 139 coal companies met their DMOs. Meanwhile, 12 cargo ships that came from coal companies have not reached 100 percent of their obligation but have formally pledged to reach 100 percent.

Nine other cargo ships were carrying coal payloads but came from traders. This is mainly because traders are not subjected to domestic market obligations

Earlier on January 1, the government banned all coal companies from exporting the commodity mainly because, at that time, coal production was focused on meeting the primary energy needs of domestic power plants, whose supplies were depleting.
