Domestic Coal Supply Secured; Luhut Says Govt Launching 37 Ships for Exports

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan chaired a coordination meeting on the Coal Export Ban and PLN's Coal Fulfillment today. In the meeting, the government agreed to launch 37 ships for export.
"Considering that the domestic stock is in a safe condition based on PLN's report, 37 vessels that have been loaded as of January 12 and received payments from buyers will sail for export," Luhut said in a written statement, Thursday, January 13.
Luhut said that the shipment is necessary to prevent risks of fire if the coals are stored for too long. However, the coal companies that supply the ships will be fined if they had not fulfilled their DMO and/or contract to PLN in 2021.
In the meeting today, PLN president director Darmawan Prasodjo ensured the company has enough coal supply for its power plants, which is 15 HOP. The critical level of coal supplies for steam power plants is 20 HOP.
It was also decided that companies that have fully met their DMO (100%) are allowed to resume exports in 2022.
