TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s Director General of Mineral and Coal Ridwan Djamaluddin on Thursday revealed that 2,078 mining permits (IUP) have been revoked due to non-compliance. This affects 1,776 companies over the vast combined area of over 2 million hectares across Indonesia.

“We revoked as many as 1,776 mineral mining companies, including metallic minerals, non-metallic minerals, and rocks with an area of 2,236,259 hectares,” Ridwan wrote in a statement on January 6.

The mining companies are spread across the provinces of Bengkulu, Jambi, South Sumatra, Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bangka Belitung, Riau Islands, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Gorontalo, Central and Southeast Sulawesi.

This decision also affects 302 coal mining companies over a combined area of 964,787 hectares spread across 12 locations in the aforementioned provinces.

The Mineral and Coal Director General said the permits were revoked as the government is improving the management of its mineral resources and reintroducing equity, transparency and justice.
