TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Wednesday reminded residents of South Sumatra to be cautious of extreme weather in this year’s rainy season. Signalling storms could cause water levels to reach 100mm/24 hours.

Head of the BMKG station in Palembang, Desindra Deddy Kurniawan, on January 5 said the agency had already issued the warning “An extreme weather potential happening on January 4-6, 2022.”

Desindra said the extreme weather will be caused by the appearance of convective clouds and it should be noted that if this type of cloud appears along with lightning, heavy rain and strong winds, it will have the potential to cause a tornado.

"Residents are asked to be vigilant if they see a natural phenomenon like this, as it is categorized as dangerous," he said.

Currently, South Sumatra has entered the rainy season marked by an increase in rainfall intensity, which peaks in February-March 2022. Extreme weather events devastated the region on December 25, 2021, namely rainfall reaching 160 mm/24 hours, causing flooding in Palembang City.
