TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Health Ministry on Wednesday confirmed that there are currently 68 cases of Covid-19 infection from the Omicron variant.

Covid-19 vaccination spokesperson Siti Nadia Tarmizi said there were 21 new additional cases that came from people who traveled overseas which consists of 16 Indonesian nationals and 5 foreign nationals. Most of them were from Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

“Omicron in Indonesia exists because of travelers from other countries such as Saudi Arabia and Turkey, which is why people are urged to reconsider traveling to the two aforementioned countries,” said Nadia in a written statement.

She said port entries are heavily monitored as a study found that the positivity rates from ocean transportation travelers were 10-times higher compared to air travel.

Tarmizi reminded people to reduce mobility and remain disciplined with the national Covid-19 health protocol. “Self-awareness and restraining the urge to travel must be done. I ask the public to work together to prevent the transmission of Covid-19 by refraining from traveling," she said.
