TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan in a virtual press conference on Monday said the government had imposed stricter surveillance on international entrances following the growing cases of Omicron in the country.

“International travelers will be closely monitored to prevent escapees at airports and quarantine facilities,” said Luhut in the press conference on December 27.

This comes as a crucial step as a spike in international arrivals is expected to take place early next year. He said domestic COVID-19 tracing and testing will be boosted, especially following the recent dropping number of testing.

Alternative entrances to Indonesia such as Juanda Airport will have its preparedness evaluated while logistical needs for people in quarantine are also being fulfilled.

“Through strong testing and tracing along with imposing the micro-level lockdown, such as at Wisma Atlet, we can implement it if local Omicron transmission has been detected,” said Luhut Pandjaitan.

As of Monday, December 27, Indonesia has confirmed 46 Omicron cases, which mostly came from international travelers arriving in Indonesia while the rest were Wisma Atlet officials.
